The Passat
For a long time, the top end of the flagpole for Volkswagen was the Passat. The four-door sedan had been built in Wolfsburg since 1972 as the brother of the Audi 80, also with a longitudinally installed engine. Due to the steel crisis and a lack of rust prevention, the early Passat unfortunately fell victim to rust for the most part.
The Passat B2 (from 1980) can still be seen much more frequently today. The B2 also retained the longitudinally installed engine and thus the close technical relationship with the Audi 80/90. Above all, the luxury version of the Passat presented in September 1981 benefited from the Ingolstadt/Wolfsburg partnership: the Santana with five-cylinder and high-end equipment was the first attempt to position a “Volkswagen” in the upper classes as well. Unfortunately it didn't really work out.
On the other hand, the station wagon variant with the nice suffix Variant, which today has a share of a good 70 percent of Passat registrations, became a real long-running favourite.
The successor B3 with a transverse engine (Type 35i, from 1988) is not (yet) a big issue for us, but we are keeping an eye on developments. After all, the technically interesting VR engines with five and six cylinders in the Passat also appeared here for the first time.
