T3
Like its predecessors T1 and T2, the third and last generation of the VW bus with rear engine (from 1979) has many fans all over the world and is generally considered to be very robust. Officially, this model series is called "Type2 model '80". All rear-engined buses are called Type 2 by the factory, because Type 1 is actually the Beetle, Type 3 the VW 1500 and Type 4 the VW 411. In the end, however, T3 became the accepted designation for the buses from 1979 to 1992, and we also find this much more appropriate - especially since the factory itself followed this logic with the front-engined T4 from 1990.
There are considerable differences between the T3 and its predecessor, not only in terms of bodywork. Which is why we are concentrating on exactly this model. From 81/83, the partially still air-cooled Otto engines were changed over to water cooling with the introduction of the diesels. Nevertheless, the 50 to a maximum of 112 hp engines in the angular bus are severely challenged or even overtaxed, which can not infrequently end with a loud bang.
Apart from the engines, which are dependent on regular maintenance, the biggest problem of the T3 is joint corrosion, especially on the body side panels, which are made up of several sheets of metal. as late as the 1989 model year, permanent wax-bitumen-based underbody protection was only available ex works for an extra DM 400. Chassis and suspension parts, on the other hand, rarely cause any grief, although after all these years a check-up and the odd new part can work wonders here.
