Der 1974 vorgestellte Typ 17 bedeutete für VW die Abkehr vom luftgekühlten Heckmotor des Käfers. Das anfangs noch skeptisch beäugte Konzept eines Kompaktwagens mit modernem Frontantrieb und Wasserkühlung entwickelte sich jedoch in kürzester Zeit zum Verkaufsschlager.

Highlights der Modellgeschichte sind sicherlich der 1976 präsentierte GTI, der 1977 von Giorgiaro in Form gebrachte Scirocco und auch das auf Grund seines Überrollbügels neckisch „Erdbeerkörbchen“ genannte Cabrio, das noch bis 1993, also noch lange nach der Einführung des Golf 2 weiter produziert wurde.

Gleichzeitig führte Volkswagen mit dem Golf 1 die Plattformstrategie ein, die uns heute hilft unsere Klassiker am Leben zu erhalten. So sind viele Teile des TYP 17 ,was Motor, Antrieb und Fahrwerk betrifft, mit allen seinen Verwandten wie Scirocco und Caddy kompatibel und bei uns immer noch in Erstausrüster-Qualität zu haben. Dazu sind wir stets bemüht nicht mehr erhältliche Teile nach zu fertigen oder auch als NOS (New-Old Stock) aus alten Lagerbeständen zu besorgen.
