The Polo
The Polo was launched in spring 1975 as the Type 86 and was the economy version of the slightly better-equipped Audi 50. It was built in this form until 1981.
Its successor, also known as the Polo 86C or Polo 2, was produced between September 1981 and July 1990 at the Wolfsburg, Mosel and Pamplona (Spain) plants in a total of around 1.7 million units. It was available as a three-door hatchback, a hatchback (coupe), or as the Derby sedan.
Under the hood were gasoline engines from 40 hp to 115 hp (G40) or naturally aspirated diesels with 45 hp and 48 hp. Characteristic for the Polo 2 are above all the front triangular windows, which were not omitted (as after a revision on the Golf 2 in the summer of 1987) and provide draft-free ventilation even without air conditioning.
In autumn 1990 came the last facelift of the Polo with the type designation 86C 2F. In addition to a modified front and a spruced up interior, some things have been modernized, especially in the area of fuel injection and exhaust gas treatment.
